  • Never Send Money or Share Financial Information
Never send money, especially over wire transfer, even if the person claims to be in an emergency. Wiring money is like sending cash — it’s nearly impossible to reverse the transaction or trace where the money went. Never share information that could be used to access your financial accounts. If another user asks you for money, report it to us immediately.
For tips on avoiding romance scams, check out some advice from the U.S Federal Trade Commission on the FTC website or in the video below.
  • Protect Your Personal Information
Never share personal information, such as your social security number, home or work address, or details about your daily routine (e.g., that you go to a certain gym every Monday) with people you don’t know. If you are a parent, limit the information that you share about your children on your profile and in early communications. Avoid sharing details such as your children’s names, where they go to school, or their ages or genders
  • Stay on the Platform
Keep your conversations on the BlackPeopleMeet platform while you get to know your match. Because exchanges on OurTime are subject to our Safe Message Filters (learn more here), users with bad intentions often try to move the conversation to text, messaging apps, email, or phone right away.
  • How are my exchanges with other members processed by BlackPeopleMeet?
Keeping you safe is and will always be a top priority. We use automated tools to scan interactions like messages solely for indications of harmful or illegal behavior. Our trained agents may review interactions that are flagged by our automated tools or in response to a user report. We may use these examples to train our technology to improve our ability to find and remove similar content.
  • Be Wary of Long Distance and Overseas Relationships
Watch out for scammers who claim to be from your country but stuck somewhere else, especially if they ask for financial help to return home. Be wary of anyone who will not meet in person or talk on a phone/video call—they may not be who they say they are. If someone is avoiding your questions or pushing for a serious relationship without meeting or getting to know you first — that’s a red flag.
  • Report All Suspicious and Offensive Behavior
You know when someone’s crossed the line and when they do, we want to know about it. Block and report anyone that violates our terms. Here are some examples of violations:
    • Requests for money or donations
    • Underage users
    • Harassment, threats, and offensive messages
    • Inappropriate or harmful behavior during or after meeting in person
    • Fraudulent profiles
    • Spam or solicitation including links to commercial websites or attempts to sell products or services
You can report any concerns about suspicious behavior from any profile page or messaging window or here. For more information, check out our Community Guidelines.
  • Protect Your Account
Be sure to pick a strong password, and always be careful when logging into your account from a public or shared computer. BlackPeopleMeet will never send you an email asking for your username and password information — if you receive an email asking for account information, report it immediately.

Meeting in Person

  • Don’t Be In A Rush
Take your time and get to know the other person before agreeing to meet or chat off BlackPeopleMeet. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to screen for any red flags or personal dealbreakers. A phone or video call can be a useful screening tool before meeting.
  • Meet in Public and Stay in Public
Meet for the first few times in a populated, public place — never at your home, your date’s home, or any other private location. If your date pressures you to go to a private location, end the date.
  • Tell Friends and Family About Your Plans
Tell a friend or family member of your plans, including when and where you’re going. Have your cell phone charged and with you at all times.
  • Be in Control of Your Transportation
We want you to be in control of how you get to and from your date so that you can leave whenever you want. If you’re driving yourself, it’s a good idea to have a backup plan such as a ride-share app or a friend to pick you up.
  • Know Your Limits
Be aware of the effects of drugs or alcohol on you specifically — they can impair your judgment and your alertness. If your date tries to pressure you to use drugs or drink more than you’re comfortable with, hold your ground and end the date.
  • Don’t Leave Drinks or Personal Items Unattended
Know where your drink comes from and know where it is at all times — only accept drinks poured or served directly from the bartender or server. Many substances that are slipped into drinks to facilitate sexual assault are odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Also, keep your phone, purse, wallet, and anything containing personal information on you at all times.
  • If You Feel Uncomfortable, Leave
It’s okay to end the date early if you’re feeling uncomfortable. In fact, it’s encouraged. And if your instincts are telling you something is off or you feel unsafe, ask the bartender or server for help.
  • LGBTQ+ Travel
Be careful while traveling. We recognize and believe in the importance of being inclusive of all gender identities and sexual orientations, but the reality is this: nowhere in the world is without potential risk, and some countries have specific laws that target LGBTQ+ people. Check out the laws around you when you travel to a new place and research what types of legal protection, if any, are available to you based on sexual orientation. In the event that you’re in unsafe territory, we suggest that you do not log into your BlackPeopleMeet account while you are there.
It’s important to exercise extra caution if you choose to connect with new people in these countries - as some law enforcement have been known to use dating apps as tools for potential entrapment. Some countries have also recently introduced laws that criminalize communications between individuals on same-sex dating applications or websites and even aggravate penalties if that communication leads to sexual encounters. Visit ILGA World to see the latest sexual orientation laws by country, and consider donating to support their research.

Sexual Health & Consent

  • Protect Yourself
When used correctly and consistently, condoms can significantly reduce the risk of contracting and passing on STI’s like HIV. But, be aware of STIs like herpes or HPV that can be passed on through skin-to-skin contact. The risk of contracting some STIs can be reduced through vaccination.
  • Know Your Status
Not all STIs show symptoms, and you don’t want to be in the dark about your status. Stay on top of your health and prevent the spread of STIs by getting tested regularly. Here’s where you can find a clinic near you (US only).
  • Talk About It
Communication is everything: Before you get physically intimate with a partner, talk about sexual health and STI testing. And be aware — in some places, it’s actually a crime to knowingly pass on an STI. Need help starting the conversation? Here are some tips.
  • Consent
All sexual activity must start with consent and should include ongoing check-ins with your partner. Verbal communication can help you and your partner ensure that you respect each other’s boundaries. Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and sex is never owed to anyone. Do not proceed if your partner seems uncomfortable or unsure, or if your partner is unable to consent due to the effects of drugs or alcohol. Read more about it here.

Black women know this is the perfect place to meet single black men. Women who see themselves as beautiful, successful, fun, outgoing, will have great success on BlackPeopleMeet.com. Black dating has never been so easy.

Black men know this is the perfect place to meet single black women. Handsome black men will have great success on BlackPeopleMeet.com. Black dating has never been so easy.

I've met some great men on this site. This is a great site. Very easy to navigate around...

BlackPeopleMeet.com is the largest dating site for African American singles in the U.S., where you’ll find literally thousands of black and biracial men and women looking to connect with others for friendship, romance, and more.

While you could sign up for a free account yourself, here I’ve gone ahead and done that for you, making my way around all areas of the site. So, since my review is comprehensive, it will give you all the information you need.

I’m going to tell you about my experience in signing up, what I was able and unable to do as a free member, what information I needed to provide in order to complete my profile, and more. By the end, you’ll able to determine whether or not BlackPeopleMeet is the right site for you.

  • Numerous useful search filters available for free
  • Large number of users providing plenty of options for black and biracial partners
  • Detailed profiles include basic stats, personality questions, photo albums, and interests
  • Up to four Message Suggestions on each profile to help members start a conversation
  • Premium tokens offer users an enhanced experience and an ability to get better results
  • Safety tips and 24-hour hotlines
  • Countless success stories showing how much difference Black People Meet can make in` people’s lives
  • Large number of matching features can confuse or overwhelm new users
  • The monthly subscription plans bill users one lump sum that automatically renews
  • Free communication is limited

Of all the sites I’ve tried over the years, this is the largest dating site for anyone seeking a black partner, with a network of close to one million members and 1,000 people signing up every day.

Its parent site is one that I know well, and you’ve likely heard of it, too – Match.com. In fact, BlackPeopleMeet is more in line with Match.com than your typical hook-up app, as many of its users are seeking a serious relationship and with most being in their 30s and 40s.

The first thing to note is that while the site is marketed towards African Americans, individuals of any ethnicity can join. It isn’t like I was asked to take a genealogy test before signing up.

Sign Up Process

5.0/5

Creating an account with BlackPeopleMeet was a breeze. All I had to do was enter my username, email address, and birthday and I was all signed up.

Is blackpeoplemeet a good dating site

Next, I had to complete my profile by filling in a short “about” section, my top interests, and my personality questions. I could have just skipped that step and started searching, but I wanted to get the best possible matches.

I thought carefully when it came to what to say in my “about” section. BlackPeopleMeet made some suggestions as to what to include here, but to be honest, I wasn’t too keen on any of them. Fortunately, I was free to make it entirely my own. Of course, I wrote only what accurately reflected me as a person and was honest as to the kind of person I was looking for, as I wanted to attract the best matches.

Then it was time to upload my profile picture. While it isn’t technically a requirement, this is a dating site, and other users would surely want to know what I look like. By uploading a picture, I concluded that these users would likely trust me more, and failing to do so might have made my account appear spammy. Also, the guys at blackpeoplemeet.com claim that profiles with photos receive 10 times more attention than those without. I was given the option to choose a photo from my Facebook account that I’d already uploaded, but I had one on my hard drive that I felt was more appropriate for a dating site.

The site then presented me with a number of pre-written greetings, which varied in personality styles from artistic to ambitious and from witty to sporty. I opted for a sporty one, as it was the kind of message that best represented me. Potential matches will be able to see this greeting, which provides a way of breaking the ice in starting a flirtatious exchange.

Contacting People

4.0/5

Communication options include instant chat, email, and video greetings, sending ‘Flirts’, favoriting profiles, and liking photos. I can also send e-gifts and set notifications to show that I’m online.

So, while there are a number of ways to get in touch with other users, unfortunately, most are limited to paid members. As a free member, this was frustrating, so I think I’m going to have to upgrade and try out the premium features.

Is blackpeoplemeet a good dating site

In addition to the basic “flirt” and “reply for free” options that come with the free account, a premium account would allow me to call users without having to reveal my phone number, thanks to the “ConnectMe” feature.

BlackPeopleMeet also offers premium members the chance to play a game called “I’m Interested”. It isn’t dissimilar to certain mobile dating apps, with its ‘swipe left and right’ style of browsing.

The site also offers a premium game called “Who Do You Like?”, where users can compare pictures of two members. Of course, they could then choose which match they liked the best.

One of the more interesting features of the site is one I’d mentioned that you first see once you’ve signed up–the pre-scripted “Message Ideas” to use as icebreakers. By using this feature to initiate a conversation, I could quickly start engaging with users who I feel might be a good match for me. Again, I’d need to upgrade my account in order to send actual messages to those profiles who hadn’t messaged me first.

Blackpeoplemeet Dating App

4.5/5

The dating site’s profiles are structured in such a way as to make it easy to get to know other users before making contact. Even as a free member, I could browse through a user’s photo gallery. With the profile below, I was able to see all three of the user’s photos in her gallery.

Blackpeoplemeet Dating Site

When it came to uploading my own photo, though, three days later, it was still pending. This meant that I wasn’t getting as many matches as I could have been.

While adding more to your profile than the absolute basics wasn’t technically a requirement, the site advises its users to enter all profile information in full. As I didn’t do this when I first signed up, I added some additional details over the next couple of days.

The matches I was getting so far were actually pretty good, but I wondered if by adding more information to my profile, they would be even better. All I had to do to make changes or add to my profile was go to the Settings menu and click on “My Profile.”

I also thought that a fully completed profile suggested to other users that I was serious in finding a match.

Mobile App

4.5/5

I searched for the app in the app store and downloaded it to my iPhone for free. I was impressed with just how smoothly it worked, and its sleek design made me want to look around and explore, even though I knew what was coming. Its layout fits in perfectly with modern apps, which meant that it didn’t hold any surprises for me in terms of navigation and overall usability.

I found the mobile app to be as easy to use as the site’s desktop version. It provides various search options and sorting features, which allowed me to find someone compatible. All of the basic functions are accessible via the app, which allowed me to test it out on my cellphone to the same extent as I did on my laptop. I could view member profiles, look at any of their photos, “flirt” with them, and even rate my daily matches in order to receive better matches the following day.

Membership Options

4.0/5

As a free member, I could access a limited number of the website’s features. Once I’d created my free account, I could navigate my way around the site as much as I wanted to. I could create my profile in full and view other profiles, as well as use the bookmark feature to save my favorite profiles. This allowed me to easily access them again later if I decide to upgrade my account and send them a message.

Free

When it comes to the site’s communication tools, however, the only one I was able to use as a free member was the flirting feature. As I’ve already mentioned, I’d need a premium account in order to send actual messages.

Basic and Premium are the only two membership levels. To upgrade my account from Basic to Premium, I can start off with a free trial so that I can try out the premium features before I commit. Once the trial is over, pricing begins at $14.95, but I know I’ll save myself some money if I opt for the long-term plan, as opposed to signing up for the monthly option.

As a premium member, I’d be able to read all of my messages, and my profile will show up at the top of the search results pages. I’d also be able to engage with other users via the instant messaging system.

Before I sign up to anything subscription-based, I always like to check to see how easy it is to cancel should I change my mind at some point in the future. Fortunately, canceling with BlackPeopleMeet isn’t difficult at all. All I would need to do would be to go to “My Account”, and from there, go to “More Account Status Changes” where I would then check the box next to “Remove Automatic Renewal”. What was even more reassuring was the presence of a phone number for the cancellations department, just in case I should run into any problems.

Also, if I wanted to remove my profile from the site completely, instead of clicking on “More Account Status Changes”, I would click on “View Account Status.” From there, I would have the option of removing my account.

BlackPeopleMeet is one of the most popular and successful dating sites out there, with thousands of success stories to show for it. Regardless of ethnicity or race, anyone can create an account for free and “flirt” with potential dates who share their appreciation for black culture and black history.

Signing up with BlackPeopleMeet could offer the opportunity people been looking for to meet someone from a diverse background, providing an exciting dating experience for those willing to give it a go.
